LABS

Labs

During their eight academic semester studies, our undergraduate students elaborate on the following mandatory laboratory classes:

  • Biology lab
  • Chemistry lab
  • Geology lab
  • Microbiology lab
  • Informatics lab

Our specialised teaching lab facilities support the educational mission of the Department by providing students with hands-on experience using modern technologies.

Research laboratories

Detailed information regarding our Research laboratories can be found here.

Educational visits

Our Department welcomes educational visits from schools and student groups. If you’re thinking about visiting our Department, please contact us to schedule a campus tour and information session.

Biology laboratory

The Biology Laboratory is a core facility in support of a variety of hands-on excerises, theses projects, and field data analysis both for undergraduate and postgraduate courses of our Department. Indicative supported courses include Biology, Marine biology, Ichthyology, Aquaculture, and Ecological processes in coastal ecosystems. The lab is fully equipped with spectrophotometers, microscopes, incubators, controlled temperature and irradiance water baths, supersonic baths, as well as many other scientific equipment.

Chemistry laboratory

The Chemistry Laboratory is fully equipped with experimental and analytical facilities that can accomodate up to 30 students, who gain laboratory and hands-on experience through a variety of work-study options. Some of the more notable pieces of equipment located here are gas chromatography devices, organic Carbon analyzers, fluorescence spectrophotometers, solid phase extraction systems, as well as a standard conditions chamber and a supercritical fluid extraction system.

Next to our research projects, the Laboratory supports the following undrgraduate courses:

  • Analytical chemisty
  • Chemical oceanography
  • Organic chemistry

Geology laboratory

The Laboratory of Geology can accommodate up to 30 students and it has been designed to host a series of hands-on exercises on several undergraduate courses such as Geology, Marine Sedimentology, Coastal Geology and Sediment Dynamics.

The lab also supports undergraduate Bachelor Thesis as well as Master and PhD thesis in Marine Geology, Marine Sedimentology and Coastal Morphodynamics, as well as research projects in the abovementioned fields.

It is equipped with high-accuracy electronic balances, sieves and motorized sieve shakers (for coarse sediment grain-size analysis), water baths (for fine-grained pipette analysis), microscopes and stereoscopes, and various instruments and consumables for physical properties analysis.

Microbiology laboratory

TheMicrobiology laboratory supports the courses Marine Microbiology and Microbiological quality control of fishery products & food. Through these lab courses, students gain experience with marine microorganisms and develop their practical skills.

Computer laboratory

The main objective of the Computer Laboratory is to make available a departmental computing facility where students can work on class reports and projects while having full Internet capabilities. The room layout was specifically chosen to allow for collaborative work on group projects as well as teaching activities and is equipped with modern workstations, flatbed scanners, laser printers and many standard software offerings for word processing, worksheet processing, presentations design, and internet browsing.

The Laboratory further equipped with specialised software to accomodate a series of undergaduate and graduate courses, including Mathematics, Statistics, G.I.S., Introduction to computer science & programming, Satellite oceanography, and many others.
