The Campus is located approximately 4 km south of Mytilene, the capital city of Lesvos island, and is easily accessible both from downtown and the Odysseas Elytis airport. Please view our map page for further information and downloadable material.
Arrival by plane: The Odysseas Elytis international airport (code MJT) has several daily connections to Athens and Thessaloniki. Direct charter flights from UK, Germany, Spain and other countries can be also used, however they are usually available during the summer period.
Arrival by ferry: Multiple ferries to Mytilene depart from Piraeus port, Athens, and run all year round on a daily basis. Ferry services also operate from Thessaloniki & Kavala (northern Greece), however visitors are strongly encouraged to consult their travel agency for availability and timetables.
Public transportation: Public bus services are linking directly the Mytilene city centre (map) with the Campus. Bus services connecting Mytilene and the Odysseas Elytis airport can also be used, however these may require a further 5-minute uphill walk to the University Hill Campus.
Travelling by car: The Campus is approximately a 10-minute drive both from Mytilene centre and the Odysseas Elytis airport; several car rental services are available to visitors.
Travelling on foot /by bike: The Campus is approximately a 40-minute walk or a 15-minute bicycle ride from Mytilene city centre. Extra caution should be paid across the coastline driveway, due to traffic, regular crosswinds and limited sidewalk space.
The island has a typical mild Mediterranean climate, with lots of sunshine throughout the year, dry summers and mild rainy winters. The mean annual temperature is 18 °C (64 °F) and the mean annual rainfall is 750 mm (30 in). Snow and very low temperatures are rare, however strong winds are common during winter.
It varies from 8 to 13 hours, depending on whether you choose to travel with a highspeed or conventional ferry boat.
Urban bus services operate from Sappho Square downtown, as well as the bus station at Odysseas Elytis airport. Country (KTEL) services operate from Agia Eirini terminal, which is approximately a 5-minute walk from Sappho Square (map).

The Department of Marine Sciences is located just outside Mytilene city (maps), where there is a variety of accommodation available to choose from. Further details can be found on our accommodation for visitors page.
There are several banks and ATMs along the waterfront in Mytilene city centre. Please note that there is no ATM in the university Campus.

The Department’s building does not have luggage or personal item storage lockers.
The Department’s indoor and outdoor facilities are wheelchair accessible. Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
The University has an open campus that you are welcome to explore, and all lectures are open to public. This however may not apply to some laboratory classes, workshops, or field trips, and best practice is to contact the Professor in charge.

A wireless internet spot is available on the 2nd floor of the Department of Marine Sciences; alternatively, regular internet channels can be obtained by connecting your laptop computer to any network hub in the Department’s offices. Please note that Campus visitors do not normally receive university log-in accounts, and requests for visitor on-site services and server access should be made by a Faculty member of staff.
The Campus has a dedicated parking space which is free of charge, and no parking permit is required. Note however that parking space is rather limited, hence public transportation is highly recommended.

Unfortunately, this is not a commonly provided service. Some car rental operators have reported to rent bicycles, however it is best practice to contact them in advance.
