Research

Antonis Chatzipavlis holds a BSc in Marine Sciences (2010), a MSc in Integrated Coastal Zone Management (2012) and a PhD (2022), all from the Department of Marine Sciences of the University of the Aegean.

During his Ph.D. Antonis investigated the morphological behaviour of two different beach systems (i.e., a perched and an open sea beach) with the use of image processing techniques and hydrodynamic data,  whereas he developed/used artificial neural networks in order to project specific beach morphological features (shoreline position and wave run-up). For this purpose, he received a scholarship from Fanourakis Foundation.

His research focuses on coastal morphodynamics/hydrodynamics (with emphasis on the breaker and surf zone), investigation of beach erosion processes, functional/constructional assessment of coastal protection works, coastal zone vulnerability to climate change/extreme events, hydro-morphodynamic modeling, as well as collection/analysis of hydrodynamic data. He has participated in several relevant European and Greek funded research projects, while  he has authored/co-authored more than 30 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and international conferences. Antonis also holds a skipper’s and a diver’s license, while he is an experienced free diver.

Teaching

During the academic period of 2022-2023 Antonis gave lectures (adjunct  lecturer and examiner) for 2 lessons: (1) Coast and Sediment Dynamics; and (2) Coastal Morphodynamics and Engineering.

Professional activities

As an active member of Coastal Morphodynamics, Management and Marine Geology Lab, Antonis participated in several european and national research projects.
