The aimed learning outcomes regarding knowledge, skills and abilities, are the following:

– Knowledge of the basic theory behind simulation modelling.

– Knowledge of the numerical methods for model development and methods of results presentation.

– Ability to use visual simulation software (VISSIM or Scilab-Xcos) for development and run of simple models of physical systems.

– Knowledge of modelling applications in the marine sciences or sciences in general.

  • Search for, analysis and synthesis of data and information, with the use of the necessary technology

  • Adapting to new situations

  • Decision-making

  • Working independently

  • Working in an interdisciplinary environment

Week 1: Basic terminology

Week 2: Development of 1-d models based on Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs)

Week 3: Run of 1-d models (Numerical solution of ODEs)

Week 4: Goodness-of-fit-Sensitivity analysis-Calibration

Week 5: Development of higher dimension models based on Partial Diffrential Equations (PDEs)

Week 6: Run of higher dimension models (Numerical solution of PDEs)

Week 7: Horizontal grids and expansion in the third dimension

Week 8: Coupled models

Week 9: Model types (statistical, deterministic, stochastic)

Weeks 10-13: Applications of models in ecology, hydrodynamics, coastal zone management

Students practice in the computer lab on the visual simulation software Vissim and on spreadsheet software

The final evaluation is carried out both with written examination and practical exercise, where the ability of students to develop and run a simple model is assessed. The contribution of two parts in the final mark is 70% and 30%, respectively.

Students are able to check their written document and ask for further information about their evaluation.
