The aim of the course is the deep understanding of the sequence and interaction of the processes from the hydrological basins surrounding the coastal areas down to the beach and the deeper part of the coastal zone. The students will become familiar with the basic geo-characteristics and processes of the coastal zone, thus being able to recognize the coastal geo-hazards.

After completing the course, the postgraduate students will have knowledge and understanding of: the nature and causes of coastal geo-hazards; how they can be assessed and mitigated; on the use of research investigation techniques and computer-based tools necessary for the study of onshore and inshore processes; the impact of geo-hazards to coastal society.

The lecture subjects are:

  • Coastal zone: Definitions, coastal types and sediments, coastal usage
  • Surface runoff, unit hydrograph theory, flood forecasting, numerical solutions
  • Universal soil loss equation. Soil erodibility factor
  • Aquifer vulnerability to salt intrusion and to overexploitation – Lab exercises
  • Coastal hazards: the sea level rise (SLR)
  • Sediment transport mechanisms, quantification of the transport, beach morphodynamics
  • Short-term sea-level rise and beach response. Numerical models for short term changes. Tutorials and PC lab exercises (GUIs)
  • Long-term sea-level changes: natural and anthropogenic causes. Parametric models. Tutorials and PC lab exercises (GUIs)
  • Methodologies and tools for the detection and mapping of inshore geomorphological characteristics and processes
  • Coastal and marine geo-hazards (others than SLR)
  • Tsunamis – Examples and coastal management plans
  • Coastal and marine works/applications and geo-hazards. Examples.
  • Examples of coastal environmental problems / issues

Face to face lectures and exercises (mainly) and distance learning (few lectures)

  • Use of ICT in teaching (PPT presentations)

  • Evaluation of students takes place via written exams. The exam paper comprises open-ended questions and exercises.
