The aims of General Chemistry  courses are: 

-To introduce to the concepts and principles, and theory of chemistry which are used in courses such as chemical oceanography, environmental chemistry, etc.  

-To provide the background knowledge of chemistry necessary to courses dealing with chemistry. 

At the end of this course the student should: 

-Know and understand the basic concepts, principles, and theory of chemistry. 

-Be familiar with the basic concepts, principles, and theory of chemistry. 

-Be able to interpret and understand processes which take place in the environment. 

-Have the basic knowledge and experience to undertake more advanced courses dealing with marine pollution and environmental chemistry and the asset to his/her future professional career. 

Skills: Interpretation of elements and chemical compounds behavior, processes affecting their form.  

-Apply theory in practice 

-Search, analyze and synthesize data and information, using the necessary tools 

-Independent work 

-Capacity to work in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams 

-Respect for the natural environment 

-Production of free, creative and inductive thinking

-Structure of the atom: Quantum theory, the Conceptual Atomic Model, Atomic orbitals, Electron configuration. 

-The Periodic Table & Properties of Elements: Effective Nuclear Charge, Atomic and Ionic Radii, Ionization Energy, Electron Affinity, Electronegativity, Magnetic properties.  

-Chemical Bonds: Ionic Bond, Covalent Bond, Molecular Orbitals, Hybridization of Atomic Orbitals, π-bonds, Resonance, Dipole Moment & Molecular geometry. Metals & Metallic Bond.   

-Intermolecular Forces and their Effects on the Physical Properties of chemical species. States of Matter. Ionic, Molecular, Covalent & Metallic Crystals.  

-Thermodynamics: Energy changes in Chemical Reactions, Enthalpy, Calorimetry, the First Law of Thermodynamics, Work-Heat & Enthalpy, Spontaneous Processes, Entropy, 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, Free Energy and Chemical Equilibrium.  

-Nuclear Chemistry: Nuclear Reactions, Nuclear Binding Energy, Natural Radioactivity and Kinetics of Radioactive decay, Nuclear Transmutation, Uses of Isotopes in selected applications, Biological Effects of Radiations. 

-Organic chemistry: Hydrocarbons and their derivatives i.e. polymers.

  • The language of evaluation: Greek. 
  • For students with disabilities, evaluation takes place via oral examination. 
  • Final student’s grade is defined by the final exam of the course (100%). 
  • Evaluation of students takes place via a final written exam. This comprises short-answer questions, open-ended questions, and exercises. 
  • The exam paper is accessible to the students for any clarifications regarding the final grade.
