The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic concepts of genetics, to understand the nature of the genes, how they are inherited, how they are expressed and how genetic diversity is created. Through classical and molecular aspects, students form a view of the applications of genetics and develop scientific thinking. Students acquire training in methods and achievements of genomic science and are taught applications of genetics in the management and protection of species.

In addition, the course aims to show students the versatility of biotechnology as a blend of basic knowledge coming from different fields of science. Through the development and analysis of biotechnological applications related to industry, environment and humans, the course aims to provide students with an understanding of the important role of microorganisms in preserving life on the planet as well as the rules that should govern the linking of basic knowledge with the productive process.

Introduction to molecular genetics: chromosome structure, genetic code, DNA replication mechanisms, transcription, RNA processing, translation. Principles of gene expression, DNA – protein interactions, gene targeting, control of gene expression, eukaryotic gene regulation, recombinant DNA and genomes. Genetic load, Genetic selection (Selection types, Speciation, species interactions), Genetic diseases. Quantitative Genetics, Genomics (Structural, Functional), gene identification, gene function determination, analysis of gene expression. Comparative genomics. Population Genetics, Molecular Ecology (molecular genetics applications for evolution, ecology and behavior issues), Genetic indicators and modern methods of detection. PCR, Sequencing (Classic and ‘New Generation’). Applications of Genetics in the Marine Environment: Physiology and evolutionary history, molecular taxonomy and barcoding techniques, assessment of diversity in marine communities / assemblages, population genetics and phylogenetics, genetic applications for the protection of species and marine ecosystems (Conservation Genetics) applications of genetic analyzes in the study of biological invasions, biomarkers – environmental control and monitoring, genetics and aquaculture (farmed marine species), genetics / genomics of the marine environment, metagenomics, metabarcoding.
